Optimize your Web proxy business

Starting a web proxy is easy, a proxy webmaster doesn’t need to know html or any other technical stuff to succeed with the proxy business. There are a lot of proxy sites or networks for sale everyday, the reasons for each single sale are very different: the proxy consumes too much bandwidth or server resources or the proxy doesn’t create the earnings as planned. The last one is what this article is about, some guide to have more success.

Create proxies for people not (only) for your earnings

Remember yourself why the proxy business is still successful, because people like surf blocked websites at school or work. Providing a proxy service that is not fast or has more ads than each TV break are not very useful for this target group. Sure you need ads because you need pay your server, advertising and of course you need some profit too, but do it the right way. Just ask yourself, “Would you use this proxy service?” Use CPC ads (Adsense) on your proxy portal page and CPM banner ads on proxified pages.

Web server and bandwidth

While its possible to get a lot of shared hosting for only a few bucks you need some real server for your proxy business. A dedicated server is what you need, how this server need to be depends on how much proxies want to host. There are two important proxy scripts: PHProxy and CGIproxy. While CGIproxy is able to offer much more features to proxy users need the script much more resources than PHProxy. Start with the PHProxy script, a smaller server (Pentium D with 2GB of memory) can handle 10 proxies using this script. Note this advice is based on my experience and depends on how you optimize your server, find some advice here. The maintenance of a Linux web server is not easy for a non Linux Guru, try to get some managed server.

Your nice looking web proxy site

Sure since you proxy is just a portal you don’t need a unique web design and more a proxy template that is optimized for maximum earnings (CPC clicks). For the start get some readymade free PHProxy template and place your Adsense code above the URL form. Check other proxies and learn from them, most have similar schemes. Add also some text about proxies to your site to get related ads and maybe some traffic via search engines like Google. Remember the advice from above:
Provide proxies for people!

Promote your proxy to get enough visitors

Without user your proxy is worthless. You need to promote your proxies on places where people come because they are looking for proxies or related stuff. That can be proxy directories, Proxy top lists (or other lists) or any other place where you can place a link (MySpace profiles, forum signatures or regular websites). If you have some budget for advertising you should try the top listing slot from popular proxy lists or advertise your proxy on some proxy mailing list. Using CPC advertisements is a lot to expensive; don’t spend more than a few cents for one click.

Promoting your site on proxy top sites

You have seen them on a lot of proxy sites: lots of buttons from proxy top sites. There are also top site submission services; you get 100 subscriptions done for just a few dollars. Don’t use them; this kind of promotion doesn’t work. A lot of those proxies list the proxy with the most button impressions at the top and this is what you don’t need, ask yourself:

“Why should some visitor browse the top site until he found my listing?”

Use only those top lists which show the top referrer on the no. 1 listing. Check the stats from the top 5 for the outbound clicks, if there are only a few of them this top site doesn’t have enough visitors.

Some final hints for your proxy business

Limit the file access, each large file downloads will eat some of your bandwidth and server resources (you need internet surfer and not downloader)
Your target group are the kids at school or people at work, this group want to visit sites like MySpace or friendster. So your users are less likely to be surfing for inappropriate videos.
For the maximum of revenue you need traffic from countries like the US, UK or CA. All other countries are not bad but what if some users in other countries will eat all your resources while people in the US getting a poor speed using your proxy.
Don’t forget to monitor your proxies, check earnings and other statistics (referrer traffic) frequently, any outgoing click to some website that has no (more) value for your proxy is a worthless click for your business.

These days my sposored listing on this proxy list was ended. I’m not sure how I found that site several weeks ago, but the site looks good enough to tray an ad. After a month i’m the 20th most visited site with 240 clicks! According Google Analytics the unique visitor count was only 50. So waht else to say? My website was listed very fast and the list site is ate least custom designed. If the site will have more traffic it would be a nice resource for traffic (maybe in a year?) Prices are very low only a few bucks for a premium listing…

ProxySites.Ca (plus mailing list)

These days we tested this proxy list which has paid and free listings (free if you place a back link). The first time we bought a 3-tier listing for $5 for an older proxy and got a free link on their mailing list, so far not a bad price (the list has more than 10K members according their site). Since the box on their home page is very short a 3-tier listing is not visible and this way I got almost no visitors. Also the post to the mailing list wasn’t a big traffic boost. The same time the site owner has posted an advertisement on WPT forum and I told him there about my experience. He was very kind and offered me a free listing for a fresh proxy with a NON proxy domain. This way the mailing list gave me ~1000 unique visitors within 5 days. Not bad… most of the traffic was from the US and this mailing list is pretty good for new proxies.

SweetProxies (sweetproxies.com)

This time was the second time I tried an advertisement on this proxy resource site. Last time (a year ago) the traffic for my proxy was not bad, but because of some technical problems my link was gone many times and I needed to send several e-mails before I got my ad for the period I paid for. This time I thought that the technical problems should be gone and I bought another ad. This time it took a few days and some e-mail request before my ad was “live”. After the first complete adday, I noticed that the traffic was lower than before and after the list of ads was moved to the sidebar the traffic went down to 25 unique visitors per day on average. Not enough for the costs or better there are lists with more visitors handling the same prices. The owner of SweetProxies is a nice and helpful guy, but it looks to me that the best days for this resource are over…

I got that recommendation from a member of the WPT forum; that site should be one of his biggest traffic sources! “Aquarezz” I hope you have betters…

The site looks almost like a warez site and first I thought “Is there really someone running that site?”. On their advertising page the convinced me to believe:

Our proxy site is receiving targeted traffic daily ( 1000+ uniques per day ) from users looking for proxy sites and proxy related information.

WOW that’s a lot for $2/10 days! Okay I paid for one (Paypal) and yes within 24 hours I got the confirmation about my listing. I need to mention that the site shows information that there are always 10-25 visitors on the site. That could be true if they have 1000 daily visitors. After the first (full) day I checked my Google Analytics stats: 17 visitors!!!

So actually (the 10 days are almost over I got 88 visitors, this is not very much for proxies. If you need to kick-off your proxy get some other promotion method, this site is not what you need!

One of the irritating things for proxy owner are non-active webmaster from proxy listing sites. Sometimes it takes more than a month until your site get listed or maybe your submission get never approved! Todays reviewed list was a great source for traffic for more than a year ago: Kortaz.com

I remember me that the site was for sale on DP, right? I guess it was too much work f or the new owner to check all the free submissions (once a week?). Anyway why is that so bad? A proxy webmaster has submitted his proxies and placed the back link on his proxies homepage and next he will wait several weeks and in the mean time the listing site gets free traffic, great? I don’t like that behavior, if someone is to busy it’s no work to disable the the submission form. I remember me that I send an email with the question if the owner from that site will accept proxy advertiser… never got an answer.

My advice: don’t waste your time with that site!

Web Proxy Directory (www.webproxydirectory.com)

This directory is one of the older directories for proxy related sites (since 2007). The directory provides some nice traffic for some of my websites listed on that sites. Since last year the directory is not free anymore and offers regular and featured listings. All links are permanent as long as the listed website is online and a proxy related sites. Approval time is fast, less than 24 hours. The site has since more than a year a PageRank 3 and provides direct links for the listed websites. A great resource for proxy webmasters doing some SEO for their proxies.

ProxyTopsites (www.proxytopsites.eu)

A strong modified Topsite using a fair ranking method. The top listed site is the website with most of the inbound traffic. While many other top sites rank sites based on the impressions is this one also good for sites with a lower traffic. If a site doesn’t send any visitor for two weeks the listing get removed. The site has decent traffic for the top listed sites and the top 3 listings having a direct link. At the top there are also some random listing

Submissions are processed together with the ProxyRoll listing site. The topsite is “spam free” (proxy related listings only).

This is the first list using the “Proxy List Script” and lists proxies for several years. While most of the “sister lists” are victims of click fraud is this script totally upgraded to make it a solid proxy resource. All submitted proxies previewed by human and the proxy owner gets an email message about approval or disapproval. The proxies are checked frequently to have a list with online proxies only. A Proxy Webmaster submit his site not only to ProxyRoll but also to ProxyTopsites.eu. As a bonus each approved site is posted to a large proxy group to. The proxies are listed in a RSS feed too.

In the past the online check has removed all proxies which doesn’t respond after 15 seconds. The new method checks daily all proxies and marks offline proxies as “suspended”. Suspended proxies are tested the next day again.
